Somewhere, USA

the road-

So often glorified so often searched and traveled on to the extent of calling it a dear friend. This summer i trekked our great land. A journey that would have taken years only 200 hundred years ago took my dear friend and i three perfect weeks. Love was set on hold to capture a moment in time that would change my life not only forever but for the better. I was co-pilot and pilot, and I'd like for you to call me Nicolai.

Some men are drawn to the sea, others to the air, but nay i am not drawn to these things the way i am to the road. The road, the concrete the feeling of safety, the knowledge that one turn of a key and the crack of an engine can get you safely 400miles away from whatever hell hole you have dragged yourself down upon is always a great feeling. Our coordinates were from North Carolina to the city of Chicago with a night stop in between in somewhere Indiana. We stayed in our bed of the truck under a light with our kitchen knives under our make shift pillows. I smoked an evenings cigarette amused and enthralled being finally on the road. I fell a slumber to the thought of the previous evenings antics and the thought of how things would change from the dynamic of going on such a epic journey. Wet, wetness, water, rain, what the hell? I woke to a small shower and Moses and i quickly got our shit into the truck and headed to the gas station for some cover to re-arrange our belongings and to make some sort of make shit breakfast. While at the gas station Moses's fight with establishment began. Thievery of some fine ground brew, he jolted to the car and we sped off to the delight of not having to purchase our morning coffee. Rain, rain, come again today, come and take me away, take me into thy big frame and wash away all that is not pure and beautiful. Driving into Chicago with it raining, listening to Via Chicago, i felt right at home. It wasn't a homecoming but it was like visiting a distant Aunt and Uncle who sent you a Check each year for your birthday. I had this huge sense of awe and angst in wanting to see the Sears Tower, just to kind of know that we had made it. To know that we had conquered the road thus far. I think our level of respect was appropriate, but our uncertainties of conquering it was still quite low.

Reaching Jeremy's all get out was about to break loose. We dropped off our belongings, packed our bags with our equipment, and off we went. We got had a few detours as we drove to the subway but still maintained a 100% records for not getting lost, especially so early on in the trip. Once we found the station and parked the car (which we stupidly left unlocked) we caught the train heading toward Monroe. I started sipping at our spiked coke till sobriety was three sheets gone. Now enjoying the hell out of the ride i noticed every person in Chicago had a fucking porch and i found this to be one of coolest things in the world. A porch culture.

Nicolai Esteban Gonzalez was born in an airplane over the pacific. He's now living in the USA.
